Tornado Destroys Mobile Homes In Uvalde

6 Families Left Homeless; No Injuries Reported

POSTED: Monday, March 20, 2006
UPDATED: 1:56 pm CST March 20, 2006

A tornado ripped through a subdivision in Uvalde late Sunday, overturning mobile homes and taking down power lines.

No injuries or deaths related to the tornado were reported, but six families were left homeless by the storm. Red Cross officials were on the scene helping victims find temporary shelter.

Uvalde County law enforcement officials said the tornado, which touched down at about 10 p.m., caused the most damage in the Uvalde Estates subdivision.

Johnny Perez, a resident, said he was in his mobile home when the tornado flipped the structure. Perez credited a mesquite tree with saving his life.

"I felt like it was going to really take off," Perez said. "The tree saved me. Thanks to that mesquite tree. The miracle tree."

Ricardo and Mary Sanchez were huddled with their family inside a home, hoping for the best.

"We couldn't believe it," Mary Sanchez said of the destruction done to a mobile home on her property.

Eugene Chapa also counted his blessings. Chapa credited his daughter's insistence on riding out the storm with her at her home instead of at his mobile home, which the tornado ripped off.

"Thank God I wasn't there," Chapa said.

Utility crews were working to restore electricity to homes that lost power during the storm.

Weather officials had not determined the tornado's severity.

Uvalde County is located about 80 miles southwest of San Antonio.
