Cooler temperatures have San Antonians heading outdoors

Bikers, joggers flock to Woodlawn Lake

SAN ANTONIO, TX – After months of sweating it out in temperatures that flirted with triple digits, San Antonians are welcoming cooler weather.

Dozens of residents showed their appreciation for the sunshine and blue skies Thursday morning by heading to Woodlawn Lake.

Whether jogging, cycling or strolling along, most people had a similar expression on their faces -- smiles as bright as the sun.

"It's a beautiful day. I love it," said Ron Gomez, who took time from his morning stroll to talk. "I've been living behind the lake about six months and barely come over here. So I figured it was beautiful, and decided to get out. "

Pauline Cantu said she had a similar thought after spending most of the summer hiding from the heat inside her air-conditioned home.

"Just staying inside the house, it does something to you," she said. "(Being outside) is a wonderful feeling, and I'm enjoying it. "

Although it was still the middle of the work week, the lake's parking lot was as full as it would be on a weekend.

Temperatures for the day were expected to top out in the mid-80s. Just a few weeks ago, that would have been a daily low.

The weather Thursday morning was also a far cry from what commuters saw at the beginning of the week. Heavy rain fell Monday morning, making the trip to work slow to impossible.

Even though Cantu was glad to see things dry out and cool off, she wonders how long it will last.

"Well, it's San Antonio weather. Put it that way," Cantu said. "We don't know. One day it's cold, the next day you're with the air conditioner."
