Residents of The Glen terrified by tornado

Neighbors recall heavy rain, howling winds

SAN ANTONIO – Residents of The Glen, a Northeast Bexar County neighborhood, were certain that a tornado had roared through the area Sunday night.

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that, indeed, the storm was officially a twister. It was an EF-0 tornado -- one of four that impacted the area -- with winds of 70 miles an hour that cut a 1.6 mile swath through the neighborhood.

“It’s a disaster,” said Edith Collazo, as she surveyed the damage Monday morning. “I mean I’ve never been through something like this.”

She said that she was awakened by what she described as “a loud noise that lasted for a long time.”

In remarkable good spirits, she said that “It sounded like a choo-choo train,” she chuckled.

By dawn it was clear, she said, that she had survived a tornado.

“I could not believe the damage that had been done to the fences. The trees. Everything,” she said.

Collazo’s neighbor Joy Denham also recalled the loud noise that accompanied the storm.

“It got really, really loud and sounded like a boom, boom,” Denham said. “It sounded like a train.

In spite of the extensive damage Denham said they found something good as a result of the storm. They found each other.

“People are still smiling,” she said. “Everybody came together last night trying to get trees out of the road and help everybody out.”
