Japhanie Gray

Anchor

From the home of the Seminoles, Japhanie Gray grew up in the town of Osceola, Arkansas. She was first trumpet in the OHS band, Cadet Col of the OHS Air Force JROTC program, and graduated as the Salutatorian of the Osceola Class of 2011.

She attended Arkansas State University, where she participated in the National Association of Black Journalists and the Spanish Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi, and was program director of the college's radio station -- Red Wolf Radio -- and was station manager over ASU-TV.

While in college, Gray hosted and produced two community-based programs: "You, Me, and the Community," which highlighted community nonprofits, and "Cultural Express," which provided a closer look at the Hispanic culture. By graduation year, Gray had received several scholarships and awards, including three awards from the NATAS Mid-Atlantic Chapter Emmy Awards for her college programs, and the A-State Distinguished Service Award for her community service.

In May 2015, Gray graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia Journalism and a minor in Spanish. At the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA and Special Honors, Gray was awarded the opportunity of presenting the A-State Class of 2015 commencement address during the graduation ceremony.

From 2012-2016, Gray also worked with the Jonesboro Radio Group as on-air personality for Hot 107.5 "The Party Station;" Mix 106.3, "The Adult Hit Music Station;" and 100.5, "The Eagle Rocks." She joined KAIT Region 8 News in Jonesboro, Arkansas, in 2013 and worked her way up from camera operator to associate producer and producer, then to reporter and to fill-in anchor.

Gray then worked in San Antonio at 10 News sister station KSAT as a reporter and fill-in anchor where she covered a variety of stories from hard news to fun events like Fiesta. There, she also focused on the community where she highlighted unique and in-depth stories of different people in a franchise she created called 'What's Up South Texas.'

As a child of God, Gray continues to put her faith first in her life and in her journalism, giving Christ all of the glory for her accomplishments. And as a person dedicated to serving others in her community, Gray is constantly working to find ways to reach out to others by letting their voices be heard through broadcast.

Most importantly, Gray says she is very excited to call Roanoke her new home and family.
