Brooks City Base gets new name

Name change to Brooks made in hopes of avoiding confusion for residents

SAN ANTONIO – Brooks City Base has a new name: Brooks.

The name change is an effort to align the development's name with its identity as an up-and-coming San Antonio community, officials said in a news release.

Brooks City Base has been around since Brooks Air Force Base was closed in 2002.

Since then, the 1,300-acre property has been turned into a mixed-use development with more than 30 businesses, apartment homes, a hospital, a full-service hotel, a medical school, K-12 charter schools, event venues, retail and dining options, and a soon-to-open 43-acre park.

But a survey in 2015 revealed that 52 percent of San Antonio residents said they thought Brooks was still a military installation, Brooks President and CEO Leo Gomez said.

Residents asked if the apartment homes were only for military families or if they need identification to get on campus, Gomez said.

With 750 acres available for future development, the new name will hopefully send the message that the campus is accessible to civilians, Gomez said.
