SAN ANTONIO – Get in the know, San Antonio. Here are the stories that impact you and some you’ll be talking about at the water cooler this week.
The 84-year-old man trapped in his home after a stolen SUV went slamming into it last month has died. On the morning of Dec. 12, Jack Weatherford was sleeping in the house he'd been living in for more than five decades when the SUV driven by an unknown suspect crashed through the wall into his bedroom. || The murder trial of David Zuniga, 18, took an unexpected turn Wednesday when Zuniga’s brother, Juan Torres, 19, testified that their oldest brother, Daniel Torres, 21, killed Army veteran Jesse Richards, 26. The jury deliberated for 15 minutes and found David Zuniga guilty of murder Wednesday afternoon. || Senate Republicans are poised to take the first step to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare law by approving a budget blueprint that they've dubbed the Obamacare "repeal resolution."
For years, the Glen in northeast Bexar County was known for its troubled past. Longtime residents who chose to stay in the area said gangs, drug activity and vacant house fires were the norm. Yet now the city of Converse is looking at annexing the Glen and two other neighborhoods in that area. || It's not something San Antonio firefighters see every day -- a house fire started by a giant tortoise. However, they believe that's how a fire started on the city's Northwest Side early Tuesday morning, causing major damage to a home in the 9700 block of Village Gate. || The San Antonio Archdiocese on Tuesday released a schedule of funeral services for Archbishop Emeritus Patrick Flores who died Monday at the age of 87. Flores died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure, the Archdiocese said.
Former Archbishop Patrick Flores has died at the age of 87, according to Rev. David Garcia of Mission Concepcion. He died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure, the Archdiocese said. Flores was the fourth archbishop to lead the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He help his post from more than two decades. In May 1970, at 40, he was consecrated as the first Mexican-American bishop of the United States. He made national headlines when he was held hostage at the Church’s San Antonio headquarters in 2000. Patrick was not injured during the nine-hour standoff. After stepping down as leader of the Archdiocese, he became Archbishop Emeritus.
Shooting at random
Security footage obtained by TMZ shows the seconds before and after a gunman police say was Esteban Santiago opened fire at the airport Friday. A couple sitting nearby drops to the ground. A woman ducks behind a baggage cart. Several people, seeing nowhere to take cover, dive face-first to the ground. Santiago confessed to planning the assault that killed five people and left several others wounded, according to a criminal complaint filed by federal prosecutors.
It takes less than a second to pull a trigger, and a lifetime to deal with the aftermath. Coming on the heels of the deadliest year in San Antonio in two decades the Delta Rho Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the group Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America met to figure out what could be done about gun violence, and also how to get people involved.
Brrr! It is cold in here
Most people chose to stay inside this weekend. Temperatures plunged to the coldest South Texas has seen in over seven years. The frigid temperatures Friday prompted Alex Fleming, the pastor of the Life Restored Church, to open his doors to the city's homeless population. The church provided those in need with warm clothes, food and shelter. Meanwhile folks along the east coast continue to dig themselves out – over the weekend a large swath of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast picked up anywhere from 10 - 18 inches of snow.
Texans move on, Cowboys seeking revenge
Houston is preparing to play New England and Tom Brady next weekend. The team’s almost stunning advancement in the playoffs comes after Brock Osweiler finally looked like the player Houston spent $72 million on, throwing for a touchdown and running for another to lead the Texans to a 27-14 wild-card playoff win over the Oakland Raiders on Saturday. As for #CowboysNation, Dallas is preparing for a rematch against the Green Bay Packers. Behind the arm of Aaron Rodgers, the Packers topped the New York Giants 28-13 Sunday afternoon. The game is also a rematch of the 2014 game in which the Packers beat the Cowboys 26-21 after a controversial call. But there is a difference this year, next week’s game will be played in Arlington not Green Bay.
