Fundraiser held for teen critically injured in accident

Teen expected to leave rehabilitation hospital in a few weeks

SOMERSET, Texas – The Somerset community came together Sunday to help support Andrea Gamez, the teen who was injured two weeks ago when a wrong-way driver slammed into her car.

A fundraiser was held Sunday at the Dairy Queen in Somerset.

Gamez was critically injured in late January when a drunk driver slammed into her car on Loop 1604.

She said she doesn't remember much about the crash.

"When she hit me, I was in shock and I didn't know if it was real. I thought it was fake. I thought I just rear-ended somebody, so I was going to try to reverse and then I guessed I passed out and that's when I remember them trying to claw me out," Gamez said. "After I've seen videos of the crash and how the car looks, I don't know how I did it. I don't know how I survived."

The high school junior is out of the hospital and in a rehabilitation hospital. Her father said they hope Gamez will be home in the next few weeks.
