Celebrate Juneteenth at several events around San Antonio this weekend

Juneteenth Festival takes place Friday, Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Juneteenth Association is hosting events Friday and Saturday commemorating the ending of slavery.

A black history play, “The Project,” will take the stage at the Continental Cafe Event Center, located at 6390 Fairdale St. “The Project” play takes place both Friday and Saturday.

Another event, the Juneteenth Festival, will also be going on Friday and Saturday. There will be a health fair, food booths, activities for children, gospel groups and four different musical acts will be performing. This event is free and will be located at Comanche Park 2.

The last event will take place next Monday; it's a golf tournament at Fair Oaks Country Club. The tournament begins at 8 a.m.

The theme for this year’s celebration in San Antonio is preserving our freedom, and sustaining our earth.

A little history about Juneteenth: According to www.juneteenth.com, it is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day.
