Firefighters association presents $4,500 check to Komen San Antonio

San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association makes donation Thursday

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association presented a $4,500 check to Komen San Antonio on Thursday morning at the Alamodome.

The association has been attending and supporting the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for 10 years.

Firefighters raised the money by selling T-shirts during Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Breast cancer hits close to home for many, including local firefighters.

"I have five women in my life that all have been touched by breast cancer," said Bobby Ford, chairman of the firefighters association. "It trickles throughout the family, and at the Fire Department, we are all about family, and it trickles through all of us. So this is a cause that we have really gotten behind."

The firefighters association has raised $50,000 selling SAFD breast cancer T-shirts over the years.

Seventy-five to 80 percent of the money remains in the local area to fund treatment, education and assist women who can't afford mammograms or get treatment.

The 2017 Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure is Saturday. People can still sign up online at komensanantonio.org.
