Tips for buying smartphones for less

Another way to save money is to buy model that's a year or two old

SAN ANTONIO – Some of the most popular smartphones on the market are also some of the most expensive.

Apple's iPhone 6s and Samsung's Galaxy S7 both cost $650, but as KSAT consumer reporter Marilyn Moritz found, consumers can find great smartphones for less.

Consumer Reports has rated dozens of smartphones, including some more affordable options. One of the newest is apple's iPhone SE, which starts at $400.

The SE looks like the older iPhone 5s, but performs more like the 6s with Touch ID, Apple Pay and the "Hey Siri" voice assistant.

Tests showed the SE has very good battery life, but one of the biggest things given up is a larger screen.

Consumer Reports also recommends LG's Escape 2 for $180. This Android has a slightly curved display with volume buttons on the back. It's a watered down version of LG's flagship phone. It's only available on AT&T.

For those who prefer a bigger phone, there's the ASUS ZenFone 2 and the Blu Vivo 5. They have 5 1/2-inch displays and cost $200.

They both offer slots for two SIM cards, so users can have home and work accounts on one phone.

Another way to save money is to buy a model that's a year or two old. Companies typically sell those at a discount.
