SAN ANTONIO – We know using sunscreen is important to prevent skin damage and protect against cancer. But the reality is that half of Americans don’t use sunscreen, according to a recent survey by Consumer Reports. One in five say it’s because of how sunscreen feels.
Consumer Reports sensory experts were given the task of smelling and rubbing different sunscreens on their skin to find the ones that are more pleasing to the senses.
In those blind tests, the panelists rubbed a quarter-teaspoon on their arm and noted its absorbency, aroma, and the feel and look on the skin.
Smell is important to some. In a Consumer Reports’ survey, 31 percent said they look for a tropical, coconut scent, and almost half preferred an unscented sunscreen.
There is hope for those who can’t stand the smell or feel of sunscreen. Consumer Reports did find some that you may like a lot better, and its tests show they offer good protection from the sun as well.
The Aveeno Protect+Hydrate SPF 30 and, from Walmart, the Equate Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30 won’t leave you shiny or greasy. If you want protection with a barely noticeable scent, Consumer Reports says, consider Pure Sun Defense SPF 50 lotion. And for those who like a tropical scent, Banana Boat SunComfort Continuous Spray SPF 50 delivers a slight pina colada fragrance.
If you still prefer not to use sunscreen, you can wear tightly woven clothing and a hat with a broad brim. Big sunglasses will protect your eyes and eyelids, but you may still need sunscreen to cover exposed skin.
