Mega consignment sale popular with budget-minded moms

Just Between Friends sale in Boerne runs through Saturday

BOERNE, Texas – The Kendall County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall is crawling with moms who will tell you that paying retail is a no-no.

"Who doesn't like saving money?" asked bargain-hunter Jessica Qualls.

Qualls was searching for clothes, puzzles and books for her children at the Just Between Friends semi-annual consignment sale.

The sale runs until 8:30 Friday night and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Shoppers can find gently used and even some new clothes, toys, books, DVDs and baby gear, such as strollers, at a fraction of retail prices.

It's also a chance for local families to sell some of their children's items that they've outgrown and make some cash.

"Most of our consignors make at least $200 to $300. I have had as much as $1,000 plus," said Jeannie Buller, who owns the area franchise of a multi-million dollar business that started in 1997 as a swap meet. Now, it's a mega event.

As an example of the savings, a Simmons bassinet that retails for $100 was tagged at $64.

It's savings Dawn Strother can appreciate. She has six children.

"They are very expensive," she said.

Strother's 11-year-old daughter, Selah, was even getting in on the action.

"Last sale, I didn't have any money and there was a lot of cute stuff," she said.

For less than $30, she bought Sperry shoes, capris, several shirts and leggings.

On Friday evening, prices will be cut in half for the duration of the sale, which continues through Saturday afternoon. Admission is free on Saturday.

Proceeds from earlier admissions will go to the Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries.
