Xenith football helmets recalled

Shells can crack, posing risk of head injury

SAN ANTONIO – Just as football season is about to kick off, football helmet manufacturer Xenith is recalling nearly 6,000 helmets.  The shell can crack, posing a risk of head injury, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The recall involves three models: the Xenith Epic Varsity, X2 Varsity and the X2E Varsity and Youth.

They were sold or factory reconditioned between May 1, 2015 and March 18, 2016. The helmets were sold through various retailers or directly to teams or schools.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges players, coaches and parents to contact Xenith to receive free replacement helmets.

To check to see if a helmet is recalled, the serial number printed on the white sticker inside the top of the helmet can be compared to the complete list, which can be found at this link: http://www.xenith.com/pages/recall.

The firm has received 29 reports of cracked helmets. The helmets are given five stars on the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings.
