Families from across the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) took Tuesday morning to apply for a Head Start position for their child. Applications are being accepted at the Alamo Convocation Center on Tuleta for the 2014-2015 school years.
"There are many, many different items that can qualify [a child], so we welcome everybody to come and complete an application," said Dani Salas, who leads Head Start for the City of San Antonio.
In general, however, the federal program is designed to help those in need.
"Head Start families are basically the lowest of the low income families in San Antonio," said Mark Sutherland-Trevino, who is in charge of the Head Start program for SAISD.
The curriculum is aimed at taking children to the next level. While not all children may be eligible, other options are available according to Salas. That includes a state Head Start program and the City of San Antonio's Pre-K 4 SA.
To qualify, children must be three or four before or on Sept. 1.
In order to apply for Head Start, documentation is needed including the child's social security card, child's birth certificate, an up-to-date immunization record, 2012 tax return or proof of income for the past 12 months, current proof of residence, and a parent/guardian photo ID. You can visit the SAISD website for a complete list of documents.
Applications will be accepted at the Alamo Convocation Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, applications will be accepted until 8 p.m. and on Saturday; they will be accepted until 2 p.m.
