Two La Vernia High School students charged with sex crimes

Police say more arrests expected in hazing scandal

LA VERNIA, Texas – Two La Vernia High School students were arrested Monday in connection with a hazing scandal, police said.

The arrests bring the number of students charged in the scandal to nine. Police said they expect to make more arrests.

The students, who were arrested on campus, were charged with sexual assault, police said.

Also on Monday, La Vernia Independent School District Superintendent Jose Moreno said in a Facebook post that the scandal has "crushed the spirit of our community."

Moreno asked the community to "unite and focus on recovering through this challenging time together."

He said that high school officials are implementing measures that will provide students "a clear path of communication to report a concern, receive counseling, and know that their voices will be heard while maintaining their privacy."
