SAISD Board fills District 6 vacancy

Christina Martinez appointed to replace Olga Hernandez

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday night unanimously voted to appoint Christina Martinez to fill the District 6 Trustee vacancy.

Martinez replaces Olga Hernandez, who resigned Feb. 21 after she was arrested on federal charges in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme.

Martinez is vice president of external relations with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, a life-long resident of SAISD and parent of two SAISD students, a district news release said.

She has worked in nonprofit organizations for more than 10 years, including Youth Literacy and Girl Scouts, and has supported partnerships with the district.

"The deliberation was a challenge due to the high quality of the candidates," SAISD board president Patti Radle said. "With such extensively strong leadership in the district as demonstrated, District 6 is in a position to forge ahead with the strength of this very dedicated community."

Martinez will serve the unexpired term that runs until May 2019, when elections will be held.

She will be officially sworn-in at the next regular Board business meeting on April 10.
