SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District is proposing to change West Avenue Elementary into a pre-kinder academy, citing declining enrollment since 2013.
The proposal is going before the NEISD board of trustees on Monday.
NEISD Superintendent Brian Gottardy said in a letter to parents that the school has seen an 18 percent decline of enrollment since 2013. He said fewer students means less money for the district and cited limited funding for traditional public schools from the state.
Gottardy said the district has seen a demand for full-day pre-kinder in the district.
West Avenue students will continue on through the remainder of the school year and will be relocated to neighboring schools next year.
A community meeting was held on Oct. 2 at West Avenue to answer questions parents had.
