Comal ISD board to consider May 2017 bond election

Multiple options being proposed

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The fast-growing Comal Independent School District board of trustees has received its first look at several options the district can use to address student growth.

The discussion for a bond comes after the district surpassed 22,000 students this year.

The majority of the bond options focus on alleviating the high student numbers at Canyon and Smithson Valley high schools.

The options include:

Option A: At $262 million, it would provide funding for two new high schools to relieve Canyon and Smithson Valley high schools. It would also fund design work for a new elementary school, land purchases, buses and maintenance projects. The bond is not projected to have an impact on the tax rate.

Option B: At $333 million it would provide funding for two new high schools and two new elementary schools. It would also fund design work for a new elementary school, land purchases, buses and maintenance projects. The bond would have a $0.03 impact on the tax rate.

Option C: At $124 million, it would provide funding for a new high school to relieve Canyon High School. This option would convert Smithson Valley Middle School into a 9th grade center to relieve Smithson Valley High School.  It would also fund design work for a new elementary school, land purchases, buses and maintenance projects. The bond would have no impact on the tax rate.

Option D: The least expensive plan at $15 million does not build any new schools; however, it provides funding for land, buses and maintenance projects. This option would require redrawing high school and middle school attendance boundaries to shift students to Canyon Lake High School.

Option D would require Canyon Lake High School to become a 6A high school overnight and would potentially split elementary and middle school feeder patterns. The board will meet three more times before possibly calling a May bond election at its Feb 9 meeting.

Below are possible school feeder patterns to help the board decide which bond proposal is best and should not be considered set in stone.
