Saavedra withdraws as Houston ISD interim superintendent

Former South San ISD superintendent had accepted position last week

SAN ANTONIO – Former South San Antonio Independent School District superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra will not return to the Houston Independent School District and accept the interim superintendent role, KPRC in Houston reports.

Last week, Saavedra accepted the role as interim superintendent but on Sunday night he withdrew his name after attending a team building workshop with the school board.

Saavedra said at some point during the day he began to realize that the board should move in a different direction and that changing the interim superintendent was not the solution.

Saavedra retired from South San ISD earlier this year. He had previously served as the district's top administrator since 2014.

The HISD held a vote last Thursday to replace its district's interim superintendent. Dr. Grenita Lathan was relieved of her duties after a motion passed 5-4, to be effective starting Monday.

Saavedra was slated to be superintendent for a six-month term and then month-to-month after, KPRC said.
