SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Independent School District plans to open another single-gender school.
The all-girls school, which will offer a program aimed at science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, will be based at Page Middle School.
SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez said single-gender schools offer parents more options when it comes to public education and helping shape students into leaders.
"These young ladies are going into a program in which we include STEM and fine arts. And so, they'll get exposure to both. Most of them go into engineering, into medicine, fields that sometimes these young ladies are not encouraged to go into," Martinez said.
The new school will open next school year and is reserved for female students in kindergarten and first grade, but more grades may be expanded if there's enough interest.
SAISD also has single-gender schools at the Young Men's Leadership Academy and Young Women’s Leadership Academy.
