Suspect detained after officer shot, killed at Texas Tech University

Campus lockdown lifted at 9:30 p.m., Hollis Daniels arrested

LUBBOCK, Texas – A Texas Tech University police officer was shot and killed Monday night.

The university shared news of the shooting on its Twitter page just after 8:30 p.m. The shooting was reported to have occurred at the university's police department.

The shooter remained at large for approximately an hour before being caught.

According to Chris Cook, the managing director of communications for Tech, police conducted a welfare check on a student.

When officers arrived they found evidence of the drugs in the room, Cook said. The student, Hollis Daniels, was brought to the police station when he pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the head.

The building is located on the North Side of campus in the 400 block of Flint Avenue. That is near the intersection of Highway 82 and 4th Street.

The school was placed on lockdown and people were told to take shelter until 9:30 p.m.

Below is a statement from Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert Duncan:
