SAN ANTONIO - While grappling with the possibility of closing several campuses, leaders at the South San Antonio Independent School District are asking the community to comment on the district’s attempt to become a “district of innovation.”

The distinction, which was first passed by the Texas Legislature in 2015, allows public school districts to act more like a charter school.

School districts would be able to start school a week earlier and relax attendance requirements and teacher certifications.

Parents can comment on the plan through April 10.

If approved, the plan would be implemented during the 2017-2018 school year and be in place for five years.
