Southside ISD administrators host play dates to energize employees for workweek

Play dates held on Monday mornings

SAN ANTONIO – Mondays can be a drag, but one San Antonio school district hosts play dates to kick off every week with a bang and get employees energized for the school week.

After KSAT meteorologist Adam Caskey jumped on stage and showed off his dancing skills at an end-of-the-school-year employee celebration in June, administrators wanted to keep the positivity and fun going for the next school year.

Every Monday, Southside Independent School District administrators meet for a play date — a short, physical and fun activity that gets the blood flowing and puts smiles on faces.

“It builds that positive energy amongst us, and then we see ourselves in a different light. It’s not always the stressful moments we interact. We can also have some fun,” said Adriana Bermea, bilingual coordinator for the district.

While it may seem to be all fun and games, the employee exercise benefits the children of Southside ISD.

“In the long run, they are going to get a better us. At the end of the day, we are here to work, which we all do 150 percent but, at the same time, we take that time to be ourselves, to build better relationships amongst ourselves so the kiddos will get the best of us,” Bermea said.

Bermea isn’t the only fan of the play dates. The district is seeing big success overall.

“We have seen great results in the way we interact with each other, especially with the positive attitude that begins to radiate across the office area and across the campus, and it’s starting to spread across the school district,” said Manuel Ornelas, student services coordinator.

The plan is to have the play dates as a long-term exercise, and administrators want to share it with other schools on the South Side.
