UIW president on 90-day medical leave after ‘uncharacteristic behavior'

SAN ANTONIO – Dr. Louis J. Agnese Jr., president of the University of the Incarnate Word, has taken a 90-day medical leave, school official said Thursday.

Board of Trustees Chair Charles Lutz said Agnese has exhibited “sporadic uncharacteristic behavior” and comments over the last two weeks.

The news release said the longtime president’s interactions with students, faculty and staff has provoked considerable concern for his well-being.

Dr. Denise Doyle, provost emertia of the university, will serve as interim president.

Lutz also apologized to anyone who might have been offended by Agnese’s words or actions.

Agnese started at UIW in 1985. In the 31 years since, he has shepherded the college to extensive growth, with record enrollment and the addition of several new buildings and academic programs.

The University of the Incarnate Word is the largest Catholic university in the state of Texas.
