Viva Fiesta!

10-day festival runs from April 16-26

SAN ANTONIO – Every year, during the month of April, the city of San Antonio shuts down to celebrate Fiesta!

Once again this year, KSAT12 is the official media sponsor and our coverage this year grows as we add even more broadcasts to our lineup.

For the first time in history, the Battle of Flowers Band Festival will be broadcast on KSAT12 and streamed live on

Most people believe Fiesta celebrates San Antonio's independence from Mexico, but it actually began with a parade that honored the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.

During the parade, bystanders and onlookers heaved flowers at the troops as they marched through the streets (pictured, below). This parade became known as The Battle of Flowers parade, and it launched what is now a two-week-long celebration called Fiesta.

This year, KSAT12 is the Official Fiesta Station, broadcasting the Texas Cavalier's River Parade (pictured, below), the Battle of Flowers Parade, the Fiesta Flambeau night parade and the Battle of Flowers Band Festival from Alamo Stadium.

Each broadcast will be enhanced with a full Fiesta special, which will provide a history of Fiesta and spotlight some of the over 100 events that occur during Fiesta and the hundreds of community agencies that profit from these events.

KSAT12 anchors will host each parade and each primetime special live from downtown San Antonio.

All the Fiesta fun kicks off with the Texas Cavalier's River Parade on Monday, April 20 at 7 p.m. with Emmitt Smith serving as grand marshal.

KSAT12's David Sears, Myra Arthur, Katie Vossler and Adam Caskey will provide complete coverage of the parade and all the festivities LIVE from the Arneson River Theatre.

The parade broadcast will be followed by a full one-hour look at the history of the Texas Cavaliers and their commitment to the San Antonio community.

Then, it's the Battle of Flowers Band Festival on Thursday, April 23, which will be live-streamed on with Jeff Roper and Fiona Gorostiza broadcasting live from Alamo Stadium.  The full festival will then be broadcast on KSAT12 on Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m.

On Friday, April 24, The Battle of Flowers Parade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. with Leslie Mouton, Mark Austin, Mike Osterhage, Adam Caskey and Mimi Gomez and Johnny Garcia of "SA Live" covering all the action LIVE from Broadway. Following the parade, "SA Live's" Fiona Gorostiza and Jeff Roper will take viewers on a journey through the history of the Battle of Flowers Parade with a live special report.

On the evening of Saturday, April 25, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade will wind throughout downtown with Steve Spriester and Ursula Pari calling all the action from a perch high above Broadway. On the ground, covering all the crowd action will be Myra Arthur and Adam Caskey.

It's sure to be an amazing Fiesta with parades, music, food and fun all right here on KSAT12/ABC and
