SAN ANTONIO – The Fiesta San Antonio Commission has unveiled the original poster for Fiesta 2017, which takes place in April.

The organization said one design by one artist was selected as the official art of Fiesta 2017 from submissions from 25 San Antonio-area artists to the commission's annual poster contest.

Local artist Therese Spina's design was unveiled Thursday night before a gathering of around 400 members and guests of the commission at the Mays Family Center at the Witte Museum, the organization said.

The official 2017 poster and poster merchandise, which include T-shirts, a limited edition medal and more, are available online and at the Fiesta Store beginning Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the commission said. The Fiesta Store is at 2611 Broadway in San Antonio. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and other Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The commission said the 2017 poster commemorates the celebration of Fiesta traditions.

"I envisioned a larger-than-life dancer personifying Fiesta stepping over the skyline of San Antonio," Spina said. "Sort of like a 'benevolent Godzilla' taking over the entire city with the color, glamour, excitement and fun of Fiesta."

Incorporating intricate details is characteristic of Spina's design work, the commission said, adding that she takes delight in including what is referred to as an "Easter egg" in the art community, meaning a hidden surprise detail that is only discovered upon closer examination.

The outline of the Alamo on the dancer's shoes is one example of an "Easter egg" found in Spina's work, the commission said.

Spina, who lives in New Braunfels, Texas, has a business called Gruene House Design. Reared in New York, the commission said she moved to San Antonio when she was 19 years old when she was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base. After completing her tour of duty in the Air Force, she began her formal education at San Antonio College, where she earned an Associate's Degree, the commission said. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Art Design and is currently working on her thesis for her Master of Fine Arts in Communication Design at Texas State University in San Marcos.
