SAN ANTONIO – Paramount Pictures officially announced the release date to the long-awaited sequel of Tom Cruise's classic film, "Top Gun".
The new movie is called "Top Gun: Maverick" and will come to theaters on July 12, 2019. Actor Tom Cruise will once again be reprising his role of pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Joseph Kosinski has been selected to direct, which will this time have Maverick as a flight instructor.

Actor Val Kilmer has said he would like to return in the sequel. Kilmer played Tom "Iceman" Kazanski in the original film but at this time it is not known if he will have a part in the new movie.

The death of the original director Tony Scott in 2012 delayed the project.
When the movie finally does come out it will have been 33 years since the original was in theaters.
"Top Gun," was the highest-grossing film in 1986, and also starred Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, and Meg Ryan.
