SAN ANTONIO – Texas music icon and veritable living legend Willie Nelson's tribute to the equally legendary Rat Pack crooner Frank Sinatra is out today.
The Red Headed Stranger's tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes, titled "My Way," includes the eponymous title track, along with "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Night And Day," a duet with Norah Jones on "What Is This Thing Called Love" and quiet renditions of "Summer Wind" and "It Was a Very Good Year."
The pair were longtime admirers of each other's work and even performed together in the 1980s at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.
KSAT's very own Paul Venema, who has known Willie for more than 40 years, got an exclusive preview of the album from the man himself more than a month ago.
"It's the best of both worlds," Venema said. "When you add Willie's touch to Sinatra, it really kicks it up a notch."
Paul couldn't help but rave about the album
"It's perfect example of his incredible diversity -- he can play anything from pure country to rock 'n' roll to the classics," Venema said. "(Willie) adds his behind-the-beat pace and phrasing (and) factoring in (longtime band member) Mickey Raphael on the harmonica, it's really hot stuff."
"My Way" joins the pantheon of tribute albums and songs Willie has produced over the years, including paeans to iconic American songwriters George and Ira Gershwin and country music innovator Ray Price, along with individual nods to Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen, ZZ Top, Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley, among many others.
"My Way" is available on all streaming services, vinyl and CD.
Nelson will perform Sept. 29 at a rally for Texas Senate hopeful Beto O'Rourke. His next scheduled show is Nov. 25 in Sugar Land at the Smart Financial Centre.
