Thousands attend final day of Fiesta Oyster Bake

Cool, breezy weather doesn't stop crowds

SAN ANTONIO – Thousands of people from all walks of life wrapped up Fiesta Oyster Bake at St. Mary's University on Saturday.

It's estimated that crowds feasted on more than 100,000 oysters during the two-day event, which celebrated its 101st year.

Attendees enjoyed food, music, drinks and entertainment.

David Garcia, from Laredo, attended for his 50th year in a row.

"It gets better every time," Garcia said, while shucking the shells off raw oysters.

Sarah Holliday grew up in Corpus Christi, and currently lives in Dallas, but told her friends she wanted to celebrate her 28th birthday at Oyster Bake.

"The oysters are amazing. We got like two big buckets of oysters. They're so good. We've had a lot of fun," Holliday said.

Crowds still attended en masse, even though the last day of Oyster Bake 2017 was a bit more breezy and chilly than recent years past.

The event carries out the party with a purpose theme of Fiesta, with proceeds funding scholarships for university students.

St. Mary's class of 1993 graduate Robert Delgado has volunteered at the oyster pit for more than 15 years.

"When I became an adult, it's like, I got to give back. So that's why every year, I try to come out. Never miss," Delgado said.

The longstanding tradition continues to mean a lot to those who put the event on and Fiesta-goers.
