Holmes High School drama department takes show on the road

Performing Arts Center torn down, new one under construction

SAN ANTONIO – For the Holmes High School drama department, the show must go on -- even if they don't have a theater in which to perform.

The drama students haven't had a permanent place to perform since the Performing Arts Center was torn down in March to make way for a new one, which won't be ready until December 2018.

Since then, drama students have used the cafeteria and now have taken their show on the road to classrooms at other campuses.

"I think it's cool that we get to kind of bring it to the kids, so that we are still able to perform," said senior Madison Rogers, who is playing Emily Hobbs in the school's production of "Elf Jr."

For many of the young actors, this is their first traveling show.

"It's a whole lot of fun. We're learning how to load the Uhaul, unload. It's all about time management," said Angel Montufar, who plays Will Ferrell's character, Buddy Hobbs. "This is Broadway, this is the big game."

Fifth-grader A.J. Williams said after seeing his first live theatrical performance, he wants to give it a try.

"I'm going to middle school, and I would like to go for theater arts," he said.

The public is invited to the final performance of "Elf Jr." at 7 p.m. at Adams Hill Elementary at 9627 Adams Hill Drive.

Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults.

There will be an opportunity to take a free picture with Santa Claus before the performance.
