SAN ANTONIO – "Transformers: The Last Knight" is the latest big-budget sequel to enter the box office arena, this time attempting to best reigning champion "Cars 3".
The latest installment in Disney's and Pixar's "Cars" franchise easily took the top spot last week but its $53.7 million in earnings also told a more complicated tale.

"Cars 3" had the worst opening in the series' history and it now looks like it might have some vulnerability as Paramount Pictures brings its fifth Transformers movie to audiences.

The new movie has a five-day outlook in the $60 million range and cost an estimated $217M to produce.
The Transformers series always has made millions internationally and it should make up ground from a slow start when it launches in 42 international markets including China and the United Kingdom.
A Bumblebee-centric spinoff is planned for release in 2018 and the Last Knight's box office success or failure could have a major impact on the future of the series.
"Transformers: The Last Knight" is director Michael Bay's final film with the series. He made his announcement before the film's premiere.

Saving the world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance between Cade Yeager (played by Mark Wahlberg), Bumblebee, and an English Lord (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins).
In "Transformers: The Last Knight", the hunted will become heroes and heroes will become villains. But only one world will survive: either theirs, or ours.
The movie is 2 hours and 29 minutes and rated PG-13.
