Film stars Tom Holland, Michel Keaton and opens in theaters on July 7

SAN ANTONIO – Sony and Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” appears to be set for a big box office opening and the movie industry is hoping for just that after some previous less than stellar performances.

Early estimates have this new version making as much as $100 million domestically in 4,348 theaters, with the studio itself making a more modest projection of around $80 million.

The film is a collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony, which reached a deal to share the character rights. Reviews of the film have been positive, with an extremely favorable 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel already is scheduled to be released on July 5, 2019.

Previous Spider-Man movies have varied greatly with their box office results. In 2007 "Spider-Man 3" made  $151 million in its opening weekend, with Andrew Garfield's “The Amazing Spider-Man” only making $62 million back in 2012.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is the only major release this weekend. A documentary about a group of Syrian rebels called “City of Ghosts,” hits theaters in a limited release and "A Ghost Story" starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck is also another option available in some places.
