The arena calls for about 2,100 tons of soil, or 70 truckloads, to accommodate the event. Crews are expected to work all day to spread the soil 12-inches deep for the installation of pens, Gary Tate, Chairman of Operations, said.

The dirt, which was originally purchased from near Charlotte, Texas, in 1988 is reused every year and then stored until the next rodeo.

The 2017 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo begins Thursday and runs until Feb. 26 at the AT&T Center and Freeman Coliseum grounds.
