SAN ANTONIO - Tristan Himes, 11, from Sterling City, Texas took home the grand champion title with his 1,359-pound Charolais "Nugget" at the 2016 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo's Junior Market Steer Show Friday night.
"I had a great team," said Himes moments after the judge slapped Nugget's hindquarters in front of a crowd of thousands at the AT&T Center.
Nugget beat out 29 other grand champion and reserve champion finalists for the overall title.
"Timmy," a 1,379-pound Maine-Anjou, raised by 10-year-old Aven Horn from Jones County 4H, took home the reserve champion title.
The 30 finalists each received $10,000 to help recover costs from raising the steer over the last year.
On Saturday, all the steer will sell at auction with the proceeds going to each student. Himes and Horn plan to use most of their winnings for college. Himes hopes to study law at Texas Tech and Horn wants to go to Texas A&M.
Last year's grand champion steer sold for $130,000, a new rodeo record.
