Rodeo Fun Fact: Voters in 1949 approve bond for Freeman Coliseum

Here are some fun facts about the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo:

There was no rodeo prior to 1950 in San Antonio -- only a livestock show for children.

In order to get a rodeo, Bexar County voters approved a bond to build the new Freeman Coliseum in 1949, which proved to be an architectural feat.

"It was one of the first buildings in the country that was clear span. It didn't have any posts in the middle. That in the coliseum in Houston," said San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo CEO Keith Martin.

Freeman is now home to rodeo shopping and the AT&T Center stages the actual rodeo.

More than 2 million people visited the rodeo in 2017 and and more than $186 million in scholarships have been awarded to children participating in the livestock show and rodeo.

The 2018 Rodeo kicks off Thursday.
