Obamacare enrollment taking place despite fears it will be repealed

EnrollSA to hold several sign-up events before Jan. 31 deadline

SAN ANTONIO – Though it may not exist soon after president-elect Donald Trump takes the White House, people are still enrolling in the national health care system known as Obamacare.

Officially, the program is called the Affordable Care Act. The program has been the topic of constant scrutiny since it became law early in President Barack Obama's tenure in office.

Republicans vow the system is broken, and they promised to replace it. Congress has begun action to do so, but have not publicly said what they could or would replace it with.

Obamacare will be around for at least the duration of 2017. So people across the country, including San Antonio, are enrolling ahead of the Jan. 31 deadline.

One of the events took place at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church on Walters St. Tuesday night. Program navigators and certified application counselors were on hand for the event, where several families were able to sign up for a health care plan.

Officials stress that as of now, nothing about the ACA has changed, and that open enrollment for this year continues with the same deadlines for coverage. They say that consumers will have coverage through this year, and likely will through 2018, as well.

Upcoming events include the Westover Marketplace at 119 SW Loop 410 on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and many enrollment opportunities at CentroMed, 5542 Walzem Road on Jan. 17. For a calendar of events, click here. You can schedule an appointment here
