New restaurant features menu full of hatch chile options

Flavor Favs: Santa Fe Trail New Mexican Cuisine

SAN ANTONIO – Roasted right outside the entrance doors, hatch chiles are the main ingredient at Santa Fe Trail New Mexican Cuisine.

Located right off Hwy 281 near Thousand Oaks Dr., this restaurant is all about New Mexico.

"New Mexican food is influenced by Native Americans and also Spanish, those unique flavors is what sets it apart," owner Jesus Mendez said.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Mendez is bringing the recipes he grew up with to San Antonio.

The recipes are a bit different than what you may see in the Alamo City. For instance, the enchiladas are not rolled up, they are flat and layered.

Everything also features either green or red hatch chiles.

Despite both of the chiles coming from the same plant, each has a different taste but both pack a punch.

"It is spicy, but a lot of flavor," Mendez said.

Santa Fe Trails is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

No matter what you pick on this menu you won't go wrong, even after hatch chili season ends.
