SAN ANTONIO – It's a yearly tradition at the White House, a celebration for Cinco de Mayo. Chef Johnny Hernandez now joins the ranks of other guest chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay.
"It's certainly an honor," Chef Hernandez said. "To share a little bit of San Antonio and our culture with Washington, the president and friends of the president is a huge honor."
A San Antonio native, Chef Hernandez has opened up La Gloria, El Machito and The Fruteria in the Alamo City. His latest accomplishment is opening a La Gloria in Las Vegas and he hopes to take his brand internationally.
"We are looking to expand our business, taking Mexican food across the ocean, especially the U.K.," Chef Hernandez said.
The White House menu will feature foods from Chef Hernandez's restaurants and the city of Puebla, Mexico, where the May 5, 1862 victory over France took place -- that is honored on Cinco de Mayo.
Also, a display of tacos will be provided and Chef Hernandez would like to get a picture of President Obama taking a bite of one to prove once and for all that San Antonio has the best.
"We need President Obama having that taco and saying Viva San Antonio," Chef Hernandez said.
