HOUSTON – What has been rumored since early December appears to be true -- the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will lay off nearly 900 people, Houston television station KPRC reported.

During a news conference Thursday, officials said the cuts represent a 5 percent reduction in the facility's workforce of about 20,000 people.

In December, KPRC reported that the institution was facing a financial problem -- how to fund high-level research with a decreasing number of patients.

Officials called the decision to cut jobs difficult. They also said the plan was reviewed to ensure that patient care will not be impacted by the reduction.
