SAN ANTONIO – Meet Hazel. She is the new therapy dog at Methodist Children's Hospital.
The canine reported for her first day on the job Tuesday.
Methodist Children's is the only hospital in south and central Texas to have a certified facility dog for their patients.
Hazel will provide support for children being treated at the hospital and hopefully help them recover quickly.
"You don't realize the benefits of it until you walk in this morning and see not only kids and waiting rooms and lobbies light up but staff, they have been so thrilled and excited for her to come,” said Caitlin Pearce, Hazel’s handler. “It's been a long time waiting."
The golden retriever is just 2-years-old and was the “valedictorian” of her training class.
