SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department welcomed airmen and trainees from Lackland Air Force Base on Thanksgiving as part of Operation Home Cooking.

“It’s an honor. These guys are going to go and protect us out there,” said Capt. Rey Garza, with SAFD.

Dozens arrived at Station 16 aboard VIA buses Thursday morning and were greeted by firefighters. It was an opportunity for people to enjoy a holiday meal, make friends and speak with their loved ones on the phone.

"They are protecting us abroad, and we are protecting their families here, and this is the only chance we can come together to thank each other, sit down, give thanks and have grace," said Rodney Hubbard, Texas State Guard warrant officer.
