San Antonio Food Bank in desperate need of donations as shelves reach historic lows

Food Bank helps people it can despite shortage

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Food Bank has a hunger for help.

The center’s shelves are at historic lows, and since it’s Hunger Action Month, there is a push to get food for those who need it soon.

Shayna Horne said she relies on the food bank to lend an extra hand. Her husband was in the Army for 12 years. He spent five tours in combat zones and is 100 percent disabled. While he is working on his education, she is trying to hold down the fort with two toddlers.

Horne needed a little help during the family’s transition time from the military to civilian life.

"When you’re going through a transition period from active duty to a veteran life, you go through a lot of stuff that people don't realize," Horne said.

Horne realized how willing the Food Bank was to help her in her time of need.

"The people there have been so incredibly kind and amazing to me," she said.

Something else that stood out to her was that there were no judgments.

"It is not where you live or where you come from. It's about what you are dealing with in life," Horne said.

Although the Food Bank is still able to feed those in need, they are in need now. Horne hopes one day she will be in a position to help fill those shelves.
