San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood will brief the media on the latest developments regarding a Northwest Side shopping center fire that claimed of a firefighter and injured two others.
Scott Deem, a six-year veteran of the fire department, was killed in the fire.
According to the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association, Deem is the 20th San Antonio firefighter to die in the line of duty. Prior to Thursday's tragedy, the last firefighter killed in the line of duty was Fire Apparatus Operator Jesse F. Bricker Jr., who died May 4, 1997.
The two mayoral candidates, Mayor Ivy Taylor and City Councilman Ron Nirenburg, reacted to tragedy on Twitter.
Gov. Greg Abbott offered his sympathies in a statement:
"Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Deem family during this unimaginably difficult time," he said. "Those who put their lives on the line to serve others deserve our deepest respect, and we can never say thank you enough. In the days to come, we ask that all Texans join us in sending their well wishes to those injured in this incident for a full and speedy recovery, and in keeping everyone affected by this fire in their thoughts and prayers."
