HEB Grilled Onions and Nopalitos Tacos

Name: Grilled Onion and Nopalitos Tacos with Queso Fresco


Prep Time: 30 min.   Cook Time: 20 min.



  • 2 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup(s) fresh lime, juiced & divided use
  • 1 lb fresh nopalitos, cut in half
  • 2 large onions, ends trimmed, skin removed and cut into rings
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 3/4 cup(s) queso fresco, crumbled



  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add salt and half of the lime juice.
  • Cut nopalitos into 1/2 inch strips (approximately) and place them into the water. Cook for 10 minutes. Drain and set nopalitos aside to cool.
  • Pre-heat grill to medium heat, 350°F - 375°F. Place grilled onions and blanched nopalitos onto grill.
  • Cook until onions are soft and everything has grill marks.
  • Chop up onions and nopalitos and place in a large bowl. Add lime juice, garlic, cumin, and queso fresco. Mix thoroughly and serve on tortillas or taco shells.
