Cash Back Day jump starts the holiday shopping season

RetailMeNot.com offers discounts Thursday with 24-hour promotion

SAN ANTONIO – Move over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Today is Cash Back Day -- and, yes, that’s now a thing.

Shoppers can get up to 20-percent of the price of their purchase back in their wallet.

The digital coupon website, www.RetailMeNot.com launched the inaugural Cash Back Day as a 24-hour promotion to give shoppers a head start on shopping and saving.

Hundreds of retailers, from Academy to Zulily, are participating. That includes Macy’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, Bass Pro Shop and many more hoping to bring in the holiday shoppers and their lists.

To take advantage of the promotion, shoppers must sign up for an account on RetailMeNot.com’s website or app. Click on the “Cash Back” tab near the top of the screen and start shopping. Purchases must be made through RetailMeNot in order for the retailer to send the cash back.

So, how much can you save? Home Depot is offering 14% cash back, so shoppers would get back $28 on a $199 DeWalt drill, for example. Kendra Scott is offering 20% cash back, so shoppers get more than $15 back on a $78 bracelet. And at Lenovo, a purchase of a $730 Yoga laptop also means 20% cash back – that’s about $146.

There are limits on how much cash back you can get at most retailers.

And, you don’t get your cash on the spot. It takes about 45 days for it to show up in your RetailMeNot wallet where you can redeem it either through PayPal, Venmo or a store gift card.

While Cash Back Day is only 24 hours, there are ways to get cash back all year through a variety of apps and browser extensions such as Ebates/Rakuten and Ibotta.
