Family member speaks out about murdered mother, pregnant sister

SAN ANTONIO – A 14-year-old charged with the murders of Janette Quiroz and Bernadett Quiroz made a court appearance this week.

The teen is accused of shooting them in the 100 block of Emerald Ash on the South Side in April.

Bernadett Quiroz was pregnant at the time. Her unborn child did not survive.

The teen suspect had been detained for several weeks at the juvenile detention center on an unrelated aggravated robbery case before investigators filed the capital murder warrant, according to police. He made an appearance in court Wednesday.

The victims' family was there when the judge decided not to release the teen to family.

KSAT caught up with a family member of the victims outside the courtroom.

“My mom (Janette), she connected people during bad times and good times,” said Damien Quiroz, son and brother of Janette and Bernadett Quiroz. “Same goes for my sister (Bernadett). She impacted so many people, including me. I wouldn't be going to school if it wasn't for her. Without them, it's just empty.”

The teen is expected back in court June 26, which is when the district attorney is expected to make a decision whether he will be charged as an adult.
