BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – A 2-year-old girl was reportedly killed by her family's dog on Friday.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office said the family had just returned from a shopping trip and were bringing things into their house, leaving the child in the front yard with the dog. When they went back outside, the attack had already happened and they found the girl lying lifeless in the front yard.

KSAT's sister station in Houston, Click2Houston, reported that authorities had to tranquilize the the dog via dart because it was extremely aggressive. The dog was later euthanized.

Preliminarily, authorities described the dog as a cur-mix, but its exact breed makeup will be determined via DNA sample, the Houston station reported.

The girl's family reportedly told law enforcement that aside from bouts of hyperactivity, they had no previous issues with the dog's temperament.

The Galveston County Medical Examiner's office is expected to conduct an autopsy on the child to determine her cause of death.

The Houston station reported that officials said the incident was a "tragic accident." No charges are expected to be filed.
