2008 double slaying in Somerset remains unsolved

Families of Raymond Bustamante, Yolanda Lucas gather for another vigil

SOMERSET, Texas – Monday marked the sixth anniversary of a double slaying outside a bar in Somerset.

On Sept. 29, 2008, 46-year-olds Raymond Bustamante and Yolanda Lucas were found shot to death outside the Pop A Top Sports Bar.

While the bar has since gone out of business, it's become the site of a yearly gathering for the victims' families.

"The first year I did this I told myself I'll keep doing this until we come to some kind of conclusion, that's all we want," said Yolanda Perez, sister of Raymond Bustamante. "We do this every year because we want closure."

Investigators with the Sheriff's Office said the pair were drinking in the bar and got into an argument with two men and two women earlier in the evening. Their bodies were discovered outside the bar around 1:30 a.m.

Witnesses reported seeing a dark colored, older model Ford F-150 with a loud muffler leaving the crime scene shortly after shots were heard. That vehicle has never been located and no suspects have ever been identified.

Beyond those few details the two families don't know much more about the crime.

They gather for a vigil every year to honor the memories of their loved ones and to get the word out about the cold case.

"We're not going to rest until we get something done, I'm not going to rest," said Rachel Casanova, the sister of Yolanda Lucas. "Another year passes and then we go back to the pain, not knowing, the crying, it takes a couple of months to get over this and it just comes back again every year."

The families are united in their grief and their hope that someone will finally come forward with the information that will help break the case open.

"This is a small town, I would think by this time we would have known something," Perez said. "That's all we're seeking is answers, because every year it just gets harder and harder."
