SAN ANTONIO – Mayor Julian Castro didn't get much face time during Tuesday night's State of the Union address but he felt his presence alone was enough for San Antonio.
"The purpose of the folks who get invited is to highlight something that the President wants to highlight and for San Antonio that's job creation," said Castro Wednesday afternoon after returning home. "San Antonio's been doing a great job of creating opportunity here so I was happy to represent the city in that capacity."
President Obama touched on many topics during his hour-long speech, including a push for renewable energy and energy independence. Castro said the city is well ahead of the curve thanks to the Eagle Ford Shale Play and recent contracts between CPS Energy and solar companies.
"San Antonio is booming in large part part because of the energy sector and that's something the President is talking about clearly on a national level as well," he said.
Earlier in the day, Castro spoke on CNN regarding immigration reform, another national policy that would have a major impact in south Texas.
"The issue of immigration reform is important to the nation and I was glad to lend my voice a couple of years ago to the effort here in Texas to have a more reasonable policy and I'm happy to lend my voice if I can be helpful with regard to policy outside Texas," said Castro.
