Man charged in NE Side carjacking, attempted robbery

Police: Devontay Hastings confessed to two crimes

The arrest of an 18-year-old man in a weekend carjacking also helped San Antonio police solve another crime.

Devontay Hastings, 18, was arrested in connection with a carjacking Friday night on the Northeast Side.

According to an arrest affidavit, a man told police that someone pointed a gun at him outside a Chacho's restaurant at Perrin Beitel and Loop 410 and took off in his car.

Police spotted the vehicle Saturday at Perrin Beitel and Perrin Central and tried to stop it, but the driver kept going, the affidavit stated. The car crashed later near Thousand Oaks. Police arrested Hastings, who they said was behind the wheel, the affidavit said.

Detectives said while they questioned Hastings, he admitted to the carjacking and also told them about another attempted robbery on Saturday morning.

In that case, a woman reported that she was approached by a man with a gun around 3 a.m. Saturday at a gas station in the 6000 block of Interstate 35.

The woman said she was able to put the car into reverse and drive away. Later, she returned to the scene and reported the crime. The affidavit stated that Hastings told detectives he also was involved in the attempted robbery.

Hastings was booked into jail Saturday on two counts of aggravated robbery.
